Shabbat Yitro (Ex. 18:1-20:23)

Looking at it with a storyteller’s perspective, last week we saw a slave population freed but disorganized. Without God’s direct intervention the words of Pharaoh (“the wilderness will swallow them up”) would surely come true.

This week we see the beginnings of an organization, both “in the trenches” in the form of a system of courts and authority and “from on high” in the form of the big 10 commandments.

Interestingly, this is the time that God speaks to the Israelites (and, according to midrash, to all people across the span of time). While the 10 commandments were accepted, we also begged Moses not to let God do that (speak to us) ever again. Moses can play telephone operator from now on.

So, limited only by your creativity and the category of food which you have been assigned, please bring something that represents one (or more) of those 10 commandments..
